You still lodge a NOIM

It must generally reach your celebrant at least one month before the wedding, and it stays valid for up to 18 months once lodged. If you’re overseas, a NOIM can often be witnessed by an authorised person abroad — your celebrant will explain exactly how, based on your situation.

Overseas identity documents

Your celebrant must confirm your identity and that you’re free to marry, which may involve overseas passports, birth certificates or divorce and name-change documents. Documents in another language may need an official translation. An experienced celebrant who regularly works with international couples will know what’s required and help you prepare it correctly.

Genuine consent and legal eligibility

Australian law requires that both partners are of legal age, not in a prohibited relationship, and are giving genuine consent freely. This is the same for everyone, wherever you’re from.
